DEALING WITH COMPLEXITY

The degree to which you can deal with instability and complexity over long periods of time determines how strong you really are at dealing with life. – Jared Chan

Life can sometimes be unpredictable and that’s because we are blind to the true complexity of the world.

We don’t actually perceive the world as it is, rather our perception is limited in order to block out the complexity of the world so that we can act in the world. This is why simplifying life causes less stress because you don’t have to deal with the complexity.

But then again, being too simple minded can leave you exposed to unforeseen danger. Regardless, we all have to manage our way through the complexity of life and we all struggle with instability in certain areas.

It’s important to try to build your emotional capacity so that you can deal with those moments where you descend into chaos. Life is a continual cycle of falling into chaos and rising back out of it. Unfortunately, many people remain stuck in a pit because they haven’t paid enough attention in order to gain the awareness of how to rise up again.

Paying careful attention enables you to identify those things which you need to learn in order to transform yourself and navigate further through life. As time demands that we continuously change, we must learn the mechanism that empowers us to change – paying careful attention is the mechanism by which we understand our surroundings and expand our self-awareness.

In closing, be aware of the following: the vast nature of complexity, the utility and dangers of simplicity, the necessity of instability for fragile beings, the emotional strength necessary to cycle down into chaos and to rise up again, the demands of time, and the attention and self-awareness necessary to constantly transform.
